ENHANCING ACADEMIC AND SUSTAINABILITY COLLABORATION: A BENCHMARKING VISIT BY POLITEKNIK BALIK PULAU TO CGSS, USM

USM, PENANG, 20 August 2026 – The Centre for Global Sustainability Studies (CGSS), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), welcomed a delegation from Politeknik Balik Pulau (PBU). The visit was part of PBU’s Smart Green benchmarking visit, which aimed to gain insights into the management and implementation of green technology at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).

The visit commenced with welcoming remarks by Associate Professor Dr Mohd Wira Mohd Shafiei, Director of CGSS, who extended a warm welcome to the delegation from Politeknik Balik Pulau, comprising Ms Saw Bee Fong, Mr Mariappen Gopalakrishnan, Ms Sabariah Mohd Farouk, Ms Sabrina Jessica Tan Abdullah and Ms Marini Mohd Thaib. The visit was also attended by Associate Professor Dr Ng Theam Foo, Deputy Director of CGSS, and Dr Sukri Mohd Shafiei, Research Officer of CETREE, CGSS.

Throughout the visit, the delegates were introduced to various sustainability initiatives implemented by CGSS, USM, including sustainable campus management approaches, green mobility, and the university’s efforts to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The delegation also had the opportunity to explore facilities related to green mobility and exchange views on strategies for implementing green technologies that could be adopted at their respective institutions.

The visit is expected to strengthen the strategic relationship between CGSS and PBU and create opportunities for broader collaboration in the areas of sustainability, green technology, and sustainable campus development in the future.
