“INTRODUCTION TO ESG AND FUNDAMENTAL OF CARBON MANAGEMENT” PROGRAMME TO ENHANCE SUSTAINABILITY AWARENESS AT CGSS, USM

UNIVERSITI SAINS MALAYSIA (USM), PENANG, 12 June 2026 – In conjunction with Universiti Sains Malaysia’s (USM) Sustainability Month celebration, the Centre for Global Sustainability Studies (CGSS) welcomed the successful implementation of the Program Pengenalan kepada ESG & Asas Pengurusan Karbon held on 11 June 2026 from 9.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. at the Seminar Hall, CETREE, TORAY Building USM. The programme was designed to strengthen participants’ understanding of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles and their growing significance in organisational sustainability and corporate decision-making. It also aimed to raise awareness of carbon management practices and their role in supporting climate action and sustainable development.

The programme featured two distinguished speakers, Associate Professor Dr. Muhammad Izzuddin Syakir Ishak from the School of Industrial Technology and Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Teoh Ai Ping from the Graduate School of Business, who shared their expertise on ESG implementation, sustainability reporting, carbon footprint measurement methodologies, and practical strategies for carbon reduction within organisations.

Among the key objectives of the programme were to enhance participants’ understanding of ESG concepts, increase awareness of carbon management, demonstrate the linkages between ESG and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), highlight the importance of ESG in industry and corporate sectors, provide foundational knowledge on carbon footprint assessment and mitigation strategies, and encourage the adoption of sustainable practices within organisations and communities. The programme also emphasised the increasing importance of ESG as a strategic framework for organisations seeking to improve long-term resilience, strengthen stakeholder confidence, and align with evolving sustainability expectations at both national and global levels. Participants were introduced to practical approaches for integrating sustainability considerations into organisational operations and decision-making processes.

As USM continues to champion sustainability as one of its core agendas, CGSS views initiatives such as this programme as an important platform for building sustainability literacy and fostering greater awareness among university staff, students, and stakeholders. The programme reflects USM’s ongoing commitment to advancing sustainability knowledge and supporting meaningful action towards a more sustainable future.

The programme contributed directly to several SDGs, particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) through sustainability capacity-building and knowledge sharing, SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) through sustainable organisational practices, SDG 13 (Climate Action) through carbon management awareness and emissions reduction strategies, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through collaborative efforts in promoting sustainability across sectors.

Through this programme, CGSS reaffirm their commitment to nurturing a sustainability-minded community capable of contributing to environmental stewardship, responsible governance, and inclusive sustainable development.
