As distinctions between fundamental and problem-oriented research have blurred, and demands to make public research more responsive to the needs of business and civil society have mounted globally, there is a greater need for increased and more efficient linkages between science and innovation. Such linkages serve to commercialise public-sector research results and to ensure that research performed in the public sector is attuned to social and economic problems including governance challenges. In order to ensure that USM's research profile befits its APEX aspirations, the centre will strive to work with existing research groups to the extent possible in the following areas: climate change and disaster risk management, integrated waste management, integrated coastal management, natural resource management, equity issues, security issues, poverty, energy, health, governance, indigenous knowledge systems, MEA, globalization and urbanization.
